Piano: Dr. James P. O’Brien

Prelude: “Ode to Joy”, the famous choral climax of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, completed in 1824. It is recognized as one of the most celebrated and globally recognized pieces of classical music in human history. Breaking with tradition, this was the first time a major composer used human voices alongside instruments in a formal symphony. It was composed in silence. Beethoven was profoundly deaf. At the end of the premiere performance, they gently turned him around so he could see the audience’s thunderous ovation.
Postlude: “Swing Low Sweet Chariot” is an African American spiritual. It was composed in the 1860s by Wallace Willis, an enslaved man in Oklahoma. He used the theme of death and heavenly salvation to offer comfort and hope. In 1909, the Fisk University Jubilee Quartet recording became the first gospel song to sell a million copies. Joan Baez’s iconic performance at the 1969 Woodstock festival popularized the song globally. This jazz arrangement invites the listener to hum or sing along.
